An Unusual Addition to the Family

We just picked up our second addition to the family in a period of a week…however, this is not a normal addition! Justin has been saving up for a Bearded Dragon for several months…something that does not come cheap when you include the price of the cage, “habitat”, heat lamp, UV lamp, etc. However, with his birthday a few weeks ago, he received several generous gifts that allowed him to finally meet his goal.

While he earned every dollar that went toward the purchase, it helped that we found a 1 yr old dragon on Craigslist that needed adoption…and cost half the price of getting a baby “beardie” at the pet store with tank and equipment. So, yesterday Justin collected all his funds and we headed to Tempe to meet his new pet.

Lisa is understandably a little hesitant about letting a spikey reptile into the house…not to mention the second cage that holds the live crickets that are destined to become the beardie’s meal. While it helps that the lizard itself is in a large glass tank, we now have a standing rule that Justin’s bedroom door is to remain closed when “Cooper” is outside of the tank crawling around the room.

Justin, however, is quite pleased with his purchase and has not stopped asking to play with him in his room. Hopefully, this will help teach Justin some responsibility as he also needs to earn money necessary to buy food and necessary supplies.
Have any of you ever owned one of these or a similiar reptile? We’re quite open to tips and advice for taking care of them!
